How to compress a PDF to 1 MB
Drop your PDF
The target is already set to 1 MB. You can change it if your limit is different.
Click Compress
We try a lossless clean-up first, then step down image quality only as far as needed to fit.
Check and download
You see the exact final size before you download. If 1 MB can’t be reached without wrecking readability, we tell you.
What fits in 1 MB?
At 1 MB most documents stay sharp: text is crisp and photos look normal on screen. As a rough guide, 1 MB holds roughly 15–40 scanned pages at clearly readable quality. A PDF made of real text (exported from Word or Google Docs) is far smaller than a scan of the same pages, so it often fits without any quality loss.
We count 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes — slightly under what some systems allow (1,024,000 bytes) — so the file passes either way.
Why people use Compress PDF to 1 MB
“Résumé: PDF, max 1 MB.”
Many applicant tracking systems cap uploads at 1 MB — especially if your CV includes a photo or a scanned certificate.
“Upload your transcript (1 MB limit).”
Scanned transcripts, ID pages and recommendation letters for school and scholarship applications.
“Attach your receipts — 1 MB per file.”
Insurance, expense and warranty forms often limit each attachment.
Why not just pick “Strong” compression?
Fixed presets either over-compress (your file is far below 1 MB and blurrier than it needed to be) or under-compress (it’s still too big). A target size keeps the highest quality that still fits your limit — and everything happens on your device, which matters when the document is an ID, a bank statement or a medical record.

Frequently asked questions
How do I compress a PDF to 1 MB?
Drop the PDF on this page and click Compress — the 1 MB target is preset. Download the result once it shows the final size.
How many pages fit in 1 MB?
As a rule of thumb, roughly 15–40 scanned pages at readable quality, and hundreds of pages if the PDF is mostly real (selectable) text. Photo-heavy pages take more space.
My PDF is 1.2 MB — will the text stay selectable?
We first try a lossless clean-up that keeps everything as-is. If that alone gets under 1 MB, text stays selectable. Only if it doesn’t do we re-render pages as optimized images.
What if it can’t get under 1 MB?
We show the smallest readable result and say so. Remove unneeded pages with Delete PDF Pages, or split the file into parts with Split PDF and compress each.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Your files are opened and processed by code running in this browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server — you can confirm it in your browser’s Network panel, or by turning off Wi-Fi after the page loads.
Is it really free?
Yes. No daily limits, no sign-up and no watermark. Because the work happens on your device, it costs us nothing to run — the site is supported by unobtrusive ads.
